The proper way to retire a flag is by burning the flag in a metal barrel on wood.
The first flag will be dissembled by separating the red and white stripes from one another and cutting the canton (blue field) free. Every flag thereafter will be placed whole upon the fire. The flag will be burned until on ashes remain. The ashes once cooled are collected and placed into a container then buried on hallowed ground such as an American Legion or VFW Post.

American Honor Guards will visit senior centers and nursing homes in Brunswick & New Hanover Counties to perform pinning ceremonies for our veterans. This consist a small ceremony. A county Commissioner from that particular county will make some opening remarks, the Director of the Facility will make opening remarks as well. Then a veteran from American Honor Guards will present to the veteran, a American flag lapel pin, a certificate of appreciation recognizing their service to the United States and finally we will present to the veteran a 2 x 3 American flag.
